Reminds me of a hunt where a nice buck was saved by shedding his antler. I was hunting from a blind overlooking where the deer come into a field. Well a doe came busting out and followed by a really nice wide heavy 8 point. She was headed right at me so I proceded to pick up my 30/06 thinking this was going to be a easy one. I had not even taken the safety off at a buck yet but he was a shooter. When I next looked up he was shaking his head and stopped about 30 yards in front of me kicking at one atler. Well needless to say I did not shoot and off he went. While sitting there rehashing things in my minds eye I could remember seeing the spread. So I jumped out to see where he went but they were already gone. I walked down to the fence line and there about 15 yards from the fence was half a rack. This was late Dec. I made a plack for the anltler and have fond memories of the hunt when I look at it. Made for a great story too.
