Perfect .44 Rem Mag for Whitetail

Hello. I recently purchased a Remington 700 PSS in .308. Therefore, I can no longer really justify to myself having my bolt-action .270 as well.

Therefore, I am interested in trading it for a .44 Rem Magnum pistol for hunting whitetail. I have been researching a bit, and the S&W Model 629, and Ruger Super Redhawk both look like good options. I almost opted to go for a .357 magnum, but a lot of people say that the load is a bit light for deer. Quite possible with proper shot placement, but still a little low.

I do not plan on putting a scope on the pistol, as most of my shots are less than 50 yards. Any of you guys pistol hunt and can offer some suggestions???

I went down this road about 10 years ago.  I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 Mag.  What I found out was that Hogdon H110 and Hornady XTP's were the way to go, but they were big, loud, boomy rounds that made my ears ring even with plugs and muffs.  After a few tries I gave up.

357 Mag will take a deer, but 44 Mag is definitely better.  44 Mag and 30-30 are comparable at 50 yards.   Eventually 44 Mag drops off in velocity quicker, because of the larger frontal area.
