Every stand I use was originally purchased back in the mid 80s with the only upkeep being a little bit of sanding and painting.  Then again I only use ladder stands being that I'm on private property and can put them up and take them down at my own leisure.  I feel as long as everything still functions like when you first got it why not use it.  Just remember to always were your safety harness.

I would double check all the nuts and bolts and use a safety harness like you mentioned and there should be no problem.I'm using an older climbing stand I bought from my Nephew and it still works great,I added an eye-bolt on each side of the seat brace and a ratchet strap for extra security and strength and will continue to use it since it is easy to set up and light weight!
