Scope for Rem 700 .308

Postby WonderMonkey » Thu Aug 30, 2012 8:24 am

Budget = I'd like to stay under $300. <- Am I too low?

Rifle on order, time for the scope. I just ordered a Remington 700 in .308. I think I'll be happy with it. Now comes the time to order a scope. I needed to wait until I knew how much money I had left over to see if I could even get a scope or if I had to re-purpose another one I had and get the scope I wanted next year.

I hunt during rifle season for five days and that's usually it. Maybe one more weekend. I'll mostly be doing standard woods hunting with some power line and open fields. 300 yds or less and typically 100 yds or less. With that in mind I think a 3-9x40mm will work but I'd like to discuss the actual value of going to a 50mm.

I've only owned one scope in my life which was a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40mm and I was happy with it for the price point. I've used a few other rifles with higher end (and more expensive) with a few bells and whistles and you can see the difference. One of them had great light gathering ability and another had some illuminated cross hairs which was nice.

I'd like your thoughts on if you agree on the 3-9x40mm (or 50mm) and what "extras" you think have real value. I don't want my lens filled up with so many playthings that I can't see the deer. I don't need range finders (I don't think) as I generally have an idea to all my markers, etc.

I'll also read through this sub-forum to see what I can pick up.

Ready? Go!

just remember the higher you mount your scope the less accurate it becomes. a 50mm objective would require extra high rings so stay with a 40mm if it works for you.

I just got a Remington 700 BDL 3006. I put a leupold vx3 on it. 4.5x14 40mm
It was 449 at gander mountain. If you are willing to spend the extra 150.. its a great scope and so far im loving it. plus you cant beat their warrenty.

There are so many scopes out there, its hard to decide. Good luck!

Will do, thanks for the point.

I noticed that is a ProStaff. What is the difference in that and a Buckmaster?

Less accurate why?

I am going to stay with the 40mm unless I get a 4.5x14x44, which is unlikely.

Thanks, it is certainly hard to decide! I'm not willing to go the extra $150. I COULD if the other options were sub-standard but I think for my level of hunting there are plenty of choices in my range. Thanks anyway!

prostaff is the lower end of nikon still a good product though. as for the accuracey the further you move the scope away from the barrel the less side tip it takes to effect the point of aim. to model the effects place a paper towel tube on a 1 foot pole keeping the base in place move it 1/4 inch to the side and look at the difference between straight and tilted by looking through the tube at a target. repeat this with 2 foot pole and see how much worse it gets. This is the same effect hieght has on a scope.

That makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.
