Another buck to score/age...? GOT HIM!

Postby kragevalley » Wed Aug 29, 2012 4:22 pm

I have quite a few pictures of this buck. It is by far the largest ive ever gotten on my cameras! im trying to be conservative with this deer as to not get my hopes up. Any guesses on what he'd score or his age?

That is a fine buck. Hope you take him. Wish the pics were closer. From what I can see, I would guess 155-165. Age, I would say 5 1/2 -6 1/2. He has a good spread, and nice beam length, and from what I can tell he is an 11pt., 5 on the right and 6 on the left. He will be scored as a 10pt typical. So that is one deduction, but all in all good in the semetics dept.. What is he working on?

You say that you had trouble with your camera spooking deer. What makes you say that, and how do you know? For years I have several cameras out, and I see no, or have any indication of deer being spooked.

In past years my cameras have taken pictures of deer turning to run away, not often, but it has happend. This deer was actually the reason i decided to try this. The first picture i got of him was actually in June (below). He appears to be looking directly at the camera? For unknown reasons he did not appear on this trail again until the August pictures... after I had moved the camera to the tree in the beginning of August. He has now become a frequent visitor. It may or may not be the camera, but i have come to like the larger view I can get from a tree, especially in thick, brushy areas like where this happens to be.

It could be he was spooked, but generally they get used to things, especially if there is something to draw him there. They do recognise something new in their areas, but if nothing moves or changes they will get used to it being there. It could be a lot of things that made him leary of coming back. Could have been your initial fresh scent on all that greenery. Anyway, all that matters is that you are getting some great pics and he is on your "list". Good luck with that.

Great shots, I'd say a solid low 150's to mid 150's would be about right, as far as age.......which state are you located in? I ask because at a glance this deer looks like it may be younger than 5 1/2-6, I could be wrong though at that distance with out a solid profile shot it's a little hard to tell. Very nice deer regardess!

I was able to harvest the buck from the previous photos on Sunday 10/28/12!!! what a memorable hunt! So to conclude the original post, he grossed 164, and to the surprise of my family and i, appears to only be 3 1/2 years old!

First off Great buck congrats on making the shot on a absoulte giant. Not sure what state but guessing buy the back drop of your pic maybe Buffalo County Wisconsin, which would not suprise me that he was only 3.5 yrs old. I hunt in northern WI and North East WI and I have killed bucks that were very heavy one was 225 dressed and the other this years buck was 190 dressed. both 3.5 yr olds. Great buck and Im sure he will make a great mount for the wall.
