FAT ?

so far i have 3 deer in the freezer .. and when i caped them ... all of them had lots of fat on them i mean real thick ...

does that mean .. well fed ... over fed ... or **** it is going to be a cold hard winter ahead ?

Well fed. We see that on the deer we kill here in Illinois all the time.

Lots of fat purely means that they have been well fed. Deer generate very little interstitial fat ( fat in the muscle) like a cow would. They store it outside the muscle. That is why venison is so lean.

What do you do with the fat? Years ago I had a fellow tell me that I should use it as muzzleloader lubricant.

"What you need to do is get yez some deer taller, and then you take an ammunimum pie pan and you set it on the stove and you put in some deer taller and some beeswax and y'all melt it down and then you set yur balls in it and let it all stiffen up real good. When it gits hard, you pull it out. That's the best kinda lube."

Let it be known, I am not putting my balls in melted deer fat or any other melted fat. And I am too old to wait for it to stiffen up

My deer was just layered in fat....not so sure I'm liking the new 200acres of corn surrounding us now......I mean she was just loaded with fat!

I quite possibly killed the leanest deer ever Saturday.
He had about 1% body fat.........maybe.
WIth all the acorns falling though he did put on some pounds based on some game pics.
I have to say even in my MI hunts I have never seen what amounted to gross amounts of fat. Fat but not overly so.

I've killed does here in Illinois that literally had a solid 1"+ of fat under the hide all along the lower back. When I butchered them I actually had to "skin" them twice...once for the hide, and then once for the fat! That's what living a life where they're never more than a 1/4 mile from corn/beans/wheat does.

Bucks that we kill in November however, have little to no fat on them.

i have heard of that before shaman but i do not do any muzzle loaders .. for being left handed i do not like the cap or the flint right in front of my eye ... but i have looked into a in-line but not in a hurry to get one

the reason why i asked is the big doe had 3/4" easy of fat around her tail and i was able to shave it off in a sheet almost all the way up the backstraps and onto the rib cage ...

i should have taken a pic the other 2 were like that but not as bad ...
