the poll on the main page got me thinking about venison heart sandwiches, a staple at our deer camp. If you haven't tried venison heart you should, it's great!
We soak the heart in saltwater for 15 minutes to get the blood out, then boil it for a couple hours in a large pot with an onion, bay leaves, salt, pepper and whatever else is lying around. Let it cool, slice it super thin and put it on some w/w bread with mustard. mmmm. mmm.
Next time try it on the grill or stove in a cast iron pan. After cleaning thoroughly, use low to medium heat, put a little oil on both sides (I like to use olive oil), and cook like you would liver, not too long (5 minutes per side). Add salt and pepper to taste and enjoy a real treat!
My hunting buddy puts in in the crock pot with some beef broth, veggies, bay leaves, and whatever seasoning we have lying around. He lets it cook on low for a few hours. Tastes like steak but has the texture of liver.
this is part of my hunting groups tradition,we eat the heart to bring us goodluck on our next hunt, not try to make it sound gory or nasty. We just grill it marinading w/ Lauwry salt,Paprika, garlic powder, black powder, blackpepper, and dried ground pepper.YUMMY!!!
