Prescribed Burns

Postby DEER30 » Wed Mar 27, 2013 1:56 pm

Do you or your local DNR use prescribed burning in their land management regime? How long after the fire dies out do the deer and turkeys come back? I have limited experience with it www.deer30outdoors.com/prescribed-burn/ with mixed results so was wondering how it is used elsewhere, its effectiveness, and how quickly the game animals return. Thanks.

The SC DNR uses it to control certain areas of natural grass lands and old growth timber, and it seems that as soon as new growth starts to appear the animals begin taking advantage of it. I haven't used it personally, since most of my land is a Pine Plantation.

Forest service did a large burn in my area last year. I'll be interested to see what comes from it.

It takes only a month or so before the animals go in to discover what happened. Then they flock to the area due to the new growth and valuable food resources that come up from the ground. It is a tool that I have used on 80% of our property and it has definitely brought the game in...almost immediately.

Here is a look at the saplings kill and the regeneration of sprouts and dormant seeds from the soil.

Hey Yall, I hust wanted to thank you for all the advice and let you know that two weeks after my public hunting area was set a blaze, I killed my first GA long beard while the stumps were still smoking! To read all about the hunt and see some photos of the bird, check out www.deer30outdoors.com/fire-bird/
