Back in stand. I went to a stand I hadn't hunted yet this year. It was about 45 degrees with a NW wind. The stand is located in the farthest west end of the property that is normally accessed by vehicle from the east end. The property is locked from vehicle entrance on 3 sides due to water. So rather than drive through the entire property, I walked in from the road on the south side and waded the creek to gain entrance to the bottom ground I wanted to hunt. I was in stand at right about 5 PM.
But I wasn't there long, about 10 minutes when the action began. A young 6 point, probably a 1 1/2 year old came in from my left and worked right down in front of me. I decided to pass this early in the season, but he offered me several perfect opportunities had I wanted to. He stood eating, quartering away, at 15 yards for a while, then he entertained me for quite some time working over a licking branch, busting small branches off, licking the ends, and marking the area. He messed around within 10-30 yards of me for almost 40 minutes completely unaware of my presence. At one point I had a doe walk by about 50 yards to my right, and the buck didn't even see her he was so intent on his licking branch.
Just after 6 I had a young doe walking down the trail towards me, but for some reason I will never know, at about 40 yards she stopped dead. blew, and ran off. She was completely upwind of me in the same direction the buck had been so I'm not sure what spooked her. I crawled out about dark, and think I might return to that stand in the next couple days if the wind is right.
Live to Hunt, Hunt to Live.
