Anyone here shoot a .308? If so, what do you shoot?

I shoot a Savage 99 in 308 WIN, it is my #1 choice for over a decade for my Opening Day tree stand sit.

I shoot a 165 grain Hornady Interlock SP over a reduced load of H4895. It makes it more like a hot 300 Savage-- a bit less velocity, a bit less recoil and perfect for shots from an elevated stands in dense woods. I've bagged bucks as close as 10 yards and as far out as 150 yards with it.

I'm shooting a Remington 700 SPS Varmint that's been cut down to 22" with a new stock. Using hand loaded Hornady 165 SST's at roughly 2600 fps. Took 4 last year with 4 shots. Furthest one ran maybe 70 yards. .308 is really an under appreciated round with all of the magnum madness. Easy to load for, tons of data, mild recoil, very accurate and more than adequate for much of the game in North America.

I shoot my T/C Encore .308 with Winchester Super X 150 grain power points, almost exclusively these days. I own another .308, a couple of .270s, a .30-06, and a .300 wsm, but in the last 3 or 4 years, I've killed about 20 or so deer with the Encore at anywhere from 10 yards to a little over 200 yards. The only deer I've missed with it was a doe at over 200 yards that I tried to shoot in the head last year as she was headed off of the private land I was hunting towards a WMA. I figured, rather than wound or have her go onto the WMA land, I'd risk the head shot and either drop her in her tracks or miss her completely.

I'm calling BS on that one. First off holding 2.87 moa at that distance with 308 isn't even close to be realistically possible. And the ballistics support it. Here is what I'm talking about:

308 winchester at 2700 fps:
velocity at 2400 yards: 742.9 fps (the bullet aint' stable anymore)
vertical flight path: -218.1 moa (I want to see someone dial this dope)
Wind drift: 12.8 moa
Spin drift: One can't even accurately figure this with unstable bullets

For your information, I'm hunting in SC and Florida, from elevated blinds and where wind isn't a factor in most cases. Since I zero my scopes to be 1 to 1 1/2 inches high at 100 yards it's very possible to accurately hit a doe in the head at 200 yards with proper support and stability. Since that post was made, almost one year ago, I've killed 10 more deer with the same rifle and only one of them wasn't shot in the neck, and it was shot at 65 yards just after sundown and after having had a corneal transplant in the right eye I opted for a double lung/heart shot since I wasn't confident in my visual acuity.

And I am calling BS on your ballistics.
He said he was shooting at 200 yards, not 2400 yards-- that's over a mile and a third!

A 200 yards shot with a well-outfitted 308 would be reasonable. I wouldn't go for the head, but that's my taste. If he's comfortable with it, that's his choice.
