Cedar Swamp ,What to do?

Postby cedar swamp » Mon Dec 09, 2013 8:43 am

Ive got property in Michigan,s Eastern U.P.A good portion of it is cedar swamp. On the north end,i clear cut 12 acres of over mature poplar, trying to regenerate. The cedar swamp has a high ground island in the middle and on the other side, conifer dune and swale complex. My question is what do do with the cedar swamp to make it more huntable?I thought of cutting narrow strips or at least a strip to the high ground. Its immature cedar (mostly 4 to 6 in dbh) and very spongy, hard to get around in and nearly impossible to hunt.In fact, ive never even been to the other side of it.Opinions would be appreciated!

Where we hunt in N. Wisconsin, most of the cedar swamps are over mature and not being cut. They provide really good thermal protection for deer when it's cold when they are young and dense. I'd leave it as a sanctuary.

Can you hunt tight to the perimeter?
Entry and exit paths?
Not sure how large your swamp is either.
Maybe u can set -up near one of those points?
THere may even be access in the interior if you get on your hands and knees (I have a place like that I recenlty found on my lease)

keep us posted, goodluck

What I own of the swamp is about 100 acres or so.There are no trails of any kind anywhere.Id have to fight my way in.No one really hunts the whole area at all,as nearly everyone around me are summer lake people.
