Anybody killing any turkeys??????

Postby rthomas4 » Sun Apr 06, 2014 10:55 am

I'm getting pictures, but no luck yet putting a tag on a bird. They're being very quiet this spring, and this one tom keeps showing up whenever I'm not hunting this particular food plot.

Ohio starts on the 21st and I'm ready to go. I've got a well brushed in (actually, sticked in) pop-up blind that I placed 3 yrs ago.
They can be real uncooperative at times, so you really have to put in some time to get one. It will be great to be out hunting again...it's been a long cold winter in NE Ohio
Go luck with your quest. Keep us updated.

I've not yet had the chance to go after any turkey. I did see 2 crossing a fence right next to the road today. The 2nd one was a big old tom. He sure was a good looking bird with all the colors flashing in the sunlight and a huge (from what I know) beard.

I coach high school baseball in the spring, so it makes it tough to spend the time necessary to turkey hunt.

I'm back from Turkey Camp this morning. I took Angus out on his last Yute Hunt this weekend. He turns 16 during the Spring Gobbler Season-- from here on out, he'll be hunting on his own as an adult. We ran into some gobblers Saturday, but could not get them interested in our calls. Sunday was a blank. All told we heard one shot.

Next weekend is the Spring Gobbler Opener.

Nope

My daughter opted out of youth weekend.

I went opening day and cows ate my decoy's.

Went back the following weekend and the boys were quiet

The bird in this picture has the thickest beard I've ever seen on a bird in my area. He keeps taunting me and I've been trying to ambush him day in and day out now ever since I saw the first picture of him back around the 20th of March. I have taken some mornings and gone down to the swamp and hunted, but after no results I've come back home and tried to get this one in the early and late afternoon. I just am not physically able to sit and wait on him all day long, and he'll show up in the pictures within a couple of hours after I'm gone, or before I get there. I think he's watching my house and when he sees me leave, he waits on me to come back and then goes to the food plot!!!!!!

I forgot to give you an update:

Sunday, on his last hunt as a yute, Angus scored a nice gobbler:

There's a bunch of stories, a podcast, etc. about it on my weblog:

I hunted last Monday and today. Had quite a few hens roosting trees 50-60 yds in front of me this morning, but didn't see or hear any gobblers. It was cold, windy and sleeting. I'll keep trying later this week.
