The portion of my comment about the Feds was directed at GunnerJacky's comment. We have Theodore Roosevelt to thank for the National lands, along with many other wildlife conservation laws. We have the socialists to thank for government intrusions into education, business, and now our healthcare. Anyone who is naive enough to think that the answer to any of our problems today is more Federal intervention needs to sit back and look around themselves, then reevaluate the role the government has in destroying our nation, along with taking away our individual rights. Anyone who owns land should have the right to manage that land in their best interest and to their own choosing. If your neighbor sold to John Deere, then they must have made him an offer that he felt it was in his best interest to agree to. It could have been worse, he could have sold it to a strip shopping center, a mall developer, or even to a low income housing developer or mobile home park.......in which case you'd really have a problem on your hands.
Most R&D facilities usually make good neighbors, and don't necessarily bring other development into outlying parcels around them. They won't be drawing retail shoppers, so other retail businesses aren't likely to pop up around the area.
