I have a NEF 25-06 rifle and it's a shooter . The 25-06 ammo is pricy so a 270 might be a better option .

I'm going to have to agree with Robert.....that .308 with the Muzzle-break would be a sweet Rifle to have and you won't have to worry about the recoil with the help of the Muzzle-break!


Other wise if your still undecided on a Rifle yet here's what Rifle I would consider.I like the idea of the Savage Hunter in a 7mm-08 with the wood stock and the Accu-trigger option.Its a great looking gun that won't have too much recoil and it will hold its value if taken care of over the years!I also like the .270 Rifles,the 25-06 are nice too,on a side note any Rifle that says WSM after the caliber (Winchester Short Mag) the shells are going to cost You quiet a bit than say a standard bullet thats easy to find in any Sporting Goods Store like a 30-06,.270,.308,7mm-08 or 30-30 shell.

I second this.  I used a save $20 with a purchase over $100 at Cabelas and picked up the xl7 in  .270. 

I have shot about 60 rounds through it at the range.  Shoots great.

If you can find the Marlin XL7 in .270 or .25-06 that should do the trick.  Powerful, good distance, and a quality rifle at an affordable price under $300.  Do some research online, the reviews have been great.

What would be wrong with a remington 700 ,say in 30 06 its fairly cheap ,lots of power,and shoots straight ,ammo is cheap ,unless you run it over with a tank you cant kill it, or go to good a pawn shop to find something cheap for a first rifle , becarefull have somebody that knows firearms go with you so u dont get taken .

Another nice affordable Rifle out there on the market since we started replying the Archery_Nut's Post is the newer Savage "Edge" Rifles...which are now called "Axis".They are some nice Rifles that use a standard trigger instead of the Accu-trigger.They are available in several Calibers and they are a Bolt-action Rifles,You can even get them in the Combo Package with the Bushnell 3X9X40mm scope and they come in some really nice Camo also.A Friend of mine bought a Savage Edge in a .243 with the Camo and scope for around $359.00 total with taxes and it has a clip that holds around 3-4 shells and its easier to un-load than the same style Rifle "Stevens" made and owned by Savage (which is a top-loader Rifle)!You can still find several of the Savage "Edge" Rifles at most Guns Stores and I would reccomend the .270 for a good all around Rifle caliber.
