Hand hatchet

Some hand hatchets have a little notch in them, what's that for?
 
Something specific, or just a general notch for whenever  a notch in your hand hatchet might come in handy?

I think most old hatchets with a notch in the side were carpenter's hatchets. The bit is slighty concaved and is only sharpened on one side.

If its got a notch it is a carpenters hatchet...notch is for pulling nails
