The white deer in Wisconsin seem to be randomly white -- only some (maybe most in that area) are white. In the New York population at Seneca, I think all of them are white.

I don't understand why people do not want them hunted. Isn't it well known that albinos often have unhealthy traits, and are generally inferior specimens?

Albino deer are protected in the state of Wisconsin unless there in the CWD zone.  If they have any hint of brown on them that would be considered fair game in the state.  Most people don't want to shoot them because people in the towns enjoy seeing them.
