Got Out Last Night and This Morning

Postby 8uck5nort » Sat Sep 19, 2009 5:04 am

The season is finally here!

I got out after work Friday and did not see anything. The start of a new season.

I got out this morning. I had a small doe mave through around 8 am. Unfortuantely,I was sitting and reading my book by then. By the time I got my bow and stood up the doe was stopped behind a stand of small trees. She just needed to go another 5 yards until she was in another shooting lane, but no luck. She turned 90 degrees and headed directly away from me into a thicket and disappered. Tried following up with a few fawn bleats, but no dice.

Taking a break to get some chores done, but will be back out for the evening hunt.

They are hunting in an urban area. The season for the urban hunt came in on Sept 15th.

I thought that must be the case.  I don't have any access in any nearby urban are, so I don't pay a whole lot of attention to those rules.  Good way to get an "extra" buck though.

That is correct.

My cousin owns a small 10 acre parcel in Tippecanoe county just outside Lafayette/West Lafayette. I took a nice doe last year in September, and I just took my first buck this year this morning. Posted pic in the Photo Corner - 2009 Harvest section. In October I will switch over to the family farm in White county and then bounce between them.

He was big for a 2.5 year old. He dressed at 160lbs and was estimated at 180-185 live weight. Had a nice fat reserve on him too. He was small racked but nice. I am totally happy as this ended a two dry spell for holding a set of antlers. Plus I can still hunt another buck this year.

I'm going to have to contest your live weight in a good way! If he was dressed out at 160 he was probably close to 200 pounds live weight. The reason I say this is I shot a doe last year that was 120 live weight but dressed out at 80 pounds without her head. With those doe facts my guess would be with the thickness of a buck's neck and bigger legs your buck should have been closer to 200 pounds live weight. None the less great buck for the year!

Congrats on the nice buck. I think the live weight is understated as well. I usually add one-third to the dressed weight to get the live weight. I have weighed a few to check this and it has been accurate on bucks and does. I would suspect that your deer tipped the scales at around 210. Great job.

Glad to talk to all of you, but I'd rather be sitting in a tree stand on a cool morning trying not to move so that the bruiser buck directly below me doesn't figure out that I am watching him!

Wow 200 to 210. I didn't think the a 2.5 yr old deer could get that heavy, but this guy was obviously well fed. I knicked the stomach when filed dressing and he was full of corn. Gotta love them midwest corn fed bucks!
