Home made deer lure

Hi All just wonder if any of you would have tips on making you own lure.
I have heard of using salt,sugar,bread soda and Calf nuts.
the nuts work to limited sucess but where i hunt its to wet
for salt and sugar it forms in to a cement lump or does this matter
