If I could have only one plot in my area I would have to go wtih chicory, its palatable, produces great tonnage, and is very nutritious. Add to that it tolerates drought better clover which will not grow on my place and it could be the perfect foodplot food.
Note: I have planted 35 different types of plants and it is important to have a large variety of these to provide good year round nutrition and attraction.

I use both clover and chicory. I also plant half my plots in annuals. You can't leave out timber stand improvements either.

TSI is when you cut/hinge cut undiserable trees to provide the deer with winter browse and cover. You open the canopy to get more sunlite to oaks,hickory,persimon, and other trees that benefit deer more.

I like a mixture of both annual and perrenial plants,the wheat,foraging oats,soybeans and corn are great for drawing Deer and Turkey in and the clover,alfalfa,chicory and brassicas are great plants that wil last for several seasons or even years if taken care of.

i plant soybeans,corn,sugar beets, turnips chicory,plotspike oats,sunflowers winter wheat and winter rye in my plots.I stay away from the clovers and alfalfa because the deer eat it to fast it never gets to grow out and for the price of seed and fertilizer the oats are cheaper and have a better deer drawing effect.

Variety is probably the way to go.  Little of both.

I have planted just about every kind of food plot, clover is the most perferred food of doe..no doubt... this should be the staple then plant annuals to draw bucks during bow season, suger beets...friut trees...anything that turns sweet...
