White-Tailed Buck Gobbles Up Injured Bird

I've seen family groups of does walking along the shore of Lake Michigan eating dead alewives (a shad-like fish prone to mass die-offs) in mid summer. At that time of year, the dead fish are dried up and have the consistency of potato chips. I'm glad to see the deer eating them because that means there are fewer for my lab eat.

About 5 years ago my wife and I were camping in central WV. We were watching a couple of doe feeding. A thunderstorm was brewing and the wind became fierce. We headed for cover. While in our cover we noticed the wind had blew a small tree about and two young robins fell out. As I contemplated how to "save" the birds the doe notice them flailing on the ground. They did not hesitate but ran to the baby birds and gobbled them both up. I thought this was not a rare happening because they did not even slow down but raced each other to get to the birds.

That video is of a deer eating a baby bird, which had probably come out of the nest and not learned how to fly yet. Watch the video and see the adult birds trying to run the deer off to defend the chick. The baby bird can't fly far enough to get away from the deer, so it bacame a meal.

Amazing video to be sure.

I agree with Cut n Run. I to, believe it to be a baby bird. You can see the parents franticly trying to distract the deer by attacing it. If I hadn't seen it, I would never have believed such a story. Seems like we learn something about nature all the time.
