EPA Denies Ammo Ban Petition

Friday, August 27, 2010

Responding to a grassroots outcry from gun owners, the Environmental Protection Agency today announced that it has denied a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity and other radical groups that had sought to ban the use of lead in ammunition.

Agreeing with the position of the NRA and the firearms industry, the agency explained in a news release that it "does not have the legal authority to regulate this type of product under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA)." Further crushing the hopes of anti-gun and anti-hunting activists, the release added: "nor is the agency seeking such authority."

"It's outrageous that this petition even went this far," said Chris W. Cox, NRA-ILA Executive Director. "We applaud the EPA for its understanding of the law and its common sense in this situation -- both of which were totally missing in the petition filed by these extreme anti-gun and anti-hunting groups."

Because the EPA has no power to regulate ammunition, it will not move ahead with a public comment period on the petition. However, a comment period will remain open until September 15 on the other part of the petition, which asks EPA to ban the use of lead in fishing sinkers.

Be sure to watch for more coverage of this important victory in next week's Grassroots Alert and in NRA's magazines.

Great news! Thanks for posting. Hope we win on the fishing sinkers, too.

Maybe not, as there is no "NRA" for fishermen!

Don't want to sound like a broken record cause I know some of you may be sick of me constantly berated those of you who are not members of the NRA and your individual State Rifle & Pistol Associations.

Notice that the ban was denied NOT because the EPA questioned the research behind this action, but because they dont have the authority issue a ban. So, the center for biodiversity (or whoever) may ultimately still have a case. They may have just brought it to the wrong authority. This is a win, but it may only be temporary.

Glad to see this! This one had me worried! No doubt, this Administration will try another back door method to limit guns in the future, you watch.

This ban of lead was only a first step to removing ammo sales to the public; and has to be fought by all concerned with their right to own guns and the ammo they require.

I am certain hsd the ban pasted it would have lead to the elimination of all ammo as the few options left would have been "ball ammo" and metal piercing ammo; and since either would have resulted in ALOT of wounded animals; there would be an out cry for abolishing hunting all together. I suppose tungsten could have been used but as we all have seen shot shells pricing go through the roof because of the lead ban, I can't imagine the cost of rounds for rifles and pistols since they have already doubled/tripled in price.

People don't let the few ruin our sport with these backdoor tactics; the opposing parties under ANY NAME are using tactics that they think, " They won't fight this measure since they don't see the immediate harm we really intend to attempt with further legislation planned if this passes!!!"
