2010 MN Hunting Log

Hey MN Hunters,
Let's use this thread to post our 2010 season notes.
 
Archery opener is tomorrow!
 
I'm planning to get behind the camera for the first two days of the season and hopefully get Mrs. Patriot's first kill on film.
 
We're taking a 4 day weekend to hunt her parents farm (3 hours from where we live).

The freezer is now packed!  Took this alpha doe from the heard on Sunday night the 19th.  She was the leader of the pack and causing the others to get anxious/cautious.  Now....time to take out a big boy!!

I got a doe on Saturday evening, passed up a doe and two fawns in the am, had 3 does and two fawns in the pm and took one of the dry does. Nice to get some meat in the freezer. Didn't see any of the bucks we have photos of, the acorns are dropping pretty heavy so I'm sure they're hitting them, and not the food plots. Time to get serious about getting a good buck.

That's my 3 year old Jasmine with me, she was pretty excited and I sure hope she'll hunt with me one day.

Ha.  Thanks, bowman12.  Dropped her in her tracks from 15 yards.  Feels good to get out there again!  I have a 3 year old girl too, and I am sure she will hunt (she has already asked me for a pink gun and a pink bow!).  ha

I had three within 60-65 yds of my stand last night for 45 minutes. They came out into the field to feed at approx 7:00 p.m. A doe and two fawns. The first one that came out, I believe was a yearling buck. He was strutting his stuff, so pretty the way they walk. Next came I believe the fawn doe, then mama came out. Sure, she sends "Junior" out to see if it's safe, then sis, and finally mama. The night before I saw them from my blind I had set up about 100-125 yds away, I watched them for over an hour. Mama is big! I mean 165-180 lbs, I was looking for horns really hard but she didn't have any, she is that big. The reason I say 165-180 lbs is my wife shot one about that size last year and I shot one the year before at my sisters place which is about 65 miles south of Canada. I had to sit in the stand, it was getting dark, so I climbed down, got my bow, couldn't see to even knock an arrow. I took 3 steps and "crunch"!! "Junior's" ears perk up, I take two more steps and "crunch" a 2nd time! YUP! UP AND GONE! You can't snap your fingers that fast. I know they couldn't see me or smell me or they would have taken off long ago. As soon as "Junior" heard that 2nd crunch he was up, and in the woods!! sis on his heels. Oh well. It was fun just to have them that close. I wouldn't shoot at that distance and in that light anyway. Sunset was 7:17 last night. Lotsa fun! I just enjoyed the show!

Congrats on the harvest folks!

I was hoping to get my wife's first kill on video, so I was behind the camera on Saturday and Sunday.  We did see a nice 2.5 year old buck at 135 yards, but that was it.

On Tuesday evening I had a nice buck at 17 yards, but he stopped, then turned back just 2 feet short of my shooting window. 

My buddy Rick was with me each of the first four days of the season and smoked this coyote on Sunday evening.
