2010 MN Hunting Log

awesome pics guys. RJohannsen and I were hunting together. I think we saw a combined 30 deer in two evening on stand (although many were the same deer going from one food plot to another). No bucks though. He took out the old doe, and now it's time to let things settle down a bit before we get back out there and crash the antlers together. Hoping this rain and flooding in southern MN doesn't delay the corn harvest as much as last year. It made things tough during the rut, although RJohannsen and I both got nice bucks on gun opener!

Let's do it again this year!  Now that's a tradition I want to start....a big buck for each of us every year!  Ha.  At least we'll get to bow hunt Northern MN until Halloween!

My buddy and Blood Brother Rick scored again this weekend!  This buck was actually killed in Wisconsin...just over the MN border.
 
Double lung shot at 20 yards.  We tracked it Saturday with minimal blood and fading spotlights.  We resumed tracking Sunday morning and quickly recovered it.
 
The buck was actually dogging does and grunting that night.  Doe led him right by my buddy.

I took my son with me on Sunday (Sep 26).  This was his very first ever hunt with me from a treestand. We had a doe come within 10 yards, but she was quartering to and didn't present a shot.

Skipping out of work a little early today to hunt the new lease property.  Dusk temps will be in the upper 50's compared to upper 70's just a few days ago.

I had a 6 pointer within 30 yds of my stand Thursday 10/14/2010. It was really windy and he came with nose into the wind and was directly downwind of me. He came in, looked directly up at me, turned and just calmly walked off, back into the woods. I had bow in hand but couldn't draw, he would have seen me move. He kept looking up at me. I was so disappointed. I could have drawn, even sitting down but as soon as I moved he was bound to take off. I just watched him slowly walk back from where he came. It was a nice encounter but I wish he had just given me a chance to draw on him. I guess I should be thankful I got to see him, but it sure would have been nice to have put an arrow in him. I'm still kicking myself but what can you do? He didn't give me chance.

Nice encounter NavyChief.  Nothing you can do in that situation.
 
My 13 year old nephew killed his first ever whitetail and first ever big game animal with a bow last Friday.  I'll share pics when I get them.
 
I'm planning to head out Wednesday night this week.  Taking my 9 year old son with me as well.

Anyone seeing any sign or pre-rut activity yet? I haven't been out in MN since the opener, but I'll be out there next weekend. Can't wait! Weather and crop harvest seem to be cooperating so far this year.

I was out last night.  Didn't see any deer, but I heard a couple rounds of grunts off to my east.
 
I grunted back, but no response.
 
Hopefully this weekend will be good.  Friday temps close to 70, then dropping to low 50's for highs on Saturday and Sunday.  Hopefully the forecasted rain isn't too heavy.
