What Gun/Guns and Ammo do You Deer Hunt with?

Here in IL I just picked up a new slug gun for this season.  its a Remington 870 Super Slug 12 gauge.  I have cycled a few different rounds through it and have not settled in yet on which one i'm going to use..... I know November is quickly approaching!
 
For everywhere else I have my savage 30-06.

bow is my prefered weapon but during firearm season i run with a encore in 7mm08 and 50 cal in the mz season

Recently ditched the BAR for a 7600 in .308.
MUCH happier with the 7600. I like that I can shoot cheap ol' core locs out of her, and still get sub 1" groups at 100 yrds!

Just joined this site as I am getting back into deer hunting after 20+ yrs, I picked up a Weatherby Vanguard in 308 with a Nikon 3-9x40 scope. It seems to shoot the 150 and 165 grain alot better than the 180. At 100 yds it will put 3 rounds in a group just under 1". Where I live the walmart doesnt carry a big selection of ammo and you do good to find what you need, since I dont want to drive 40 miles everytime I need some ammo I have been using the Federal 150 gr. soft point and will likely stick with it since that's what I zeroed with, but just looked yesterday and they are out... go figure.

I guess i'm the oddball here. I use a weatherby mark 5 sporter with a 270 grain in 375 h&h mag. Good for 300 yrds, wont bloodshot the meat and they drop where they stand. Can't ask for more than that.

I guess I must be the ole'foggey because I use a Marlin 336 Lever action in .30-.30 using Hornady's new LeveRevolution ammo. But, where I hunt in Michigan, I won't be making shots any longer than 50-60 yards. I mounted a 3-9x40 scope from Cabela's and I'm good to go. I don't need a monster caliber, I try to make a good clean, ethical shot. Heck, there are hunters out there taking large whitetail with .223's. I think that's great!

You are absolutely correct!

And I can't understand why my friends make fun of me just because I use a 40,000 lb, 50 seat motor coach to commute to and from work. Go figure.

You're not an old fogy, you're someone with common sense. From what I've read, there have been more deer taken with 30-30's & .35 Remington's than all other calibers put together.

There are about 60 calibers dedicated to deer size animals. Ridiculous! Manufacturers keep coming out with new "stuff" so people will keep buying new rifles ... oooh, maybe this is better?

And of course, they keep making the new stuff more & more powerful. Why? Are the deer getting bigger & better armored? Well of course they're going after the "ones" with the "mine is bigger than yours" crowd, if you know what I mean.

Dead is dead & without offending anyone, any 30-30 will kill cleaner & faster than the best legal arrow in the world.

Ive killed deer with quite a few different rifles and what I carry on a certain day depends on my mood. Ive got a custom 7mm-300Weatherby which is a 300 weatherby necked down to 7mm. Shoots a 160gr bullet at about 3200-3300fps. Killed my biggest buck with it(156"whitetail). Also have a custom 270 gibbs and 25 Gibbs. Ive killed deer with both of them but only one or two with the 270 gibbs and quite a few more with the 25 Gibbs. Also have a Ruger Hawkeye 270 that Ive been using alot the last couple years. Ive also used my Rem 700 22-250 on whitetails and antelope. Hopefully this year I can kill a deer with my new Rem 700 243 Win. Its quickly becoming my favorite rifle. Also have a marlin 336 30-30 that i need to kill a deer with.
