70# to 60#?

I shoot a martin cheetah that is set at 70# because i went elk hunting last year and wanted the extra penitration. I got a good deal from a friend and bought a hoyt turbohawk but it only goes up to 60#? willn this make a big difference in my arrow speed and penitration? should i stick with the lesser bow just to keep the extra 10# of draw weight? any advise would be appreciated

if you are going to elk hunt alot i say keep the martin.

I believe the rule of thumb is +/- 2 feet per second for every pound added/subtracted from the draw weight.  So to go from a 70# to 60# bow you are losing approximately 20 fps.  The speed isn't nearly as important as shot placement or arrow weight however.  If you shoot the Turbohawk with heavier arrows you may actually get better penetration than with your Cheetah shooting lighter arrows. 
 
Another option would be to buy 70# limbs for your Turbohawk, you could probably find a pretty good deal in the Archerytalk.com classifieds section.

thanks for the advise. i agree and mostly i will use it for whitetails in my home state of wisconsin and also some league and 3d shooting so i dont believe the 10# will be that big of a deal. might actually help me get a smoother draw and more accurate shots

Too much emphisis is put on speed when it is actually the Kenetic Energy that counts when it comes to hunting. Both bows, when set up right, have plenty of KE in them to hunt about any game in the US. Don't worry about the speed, unless of course you are useing it as a pacifier for not judging the distance correctly. Instead concentrate on being confortable with your equipment and shot placement. Both bows are very capable of shooting elk.

I went from 70 to 60 and where it makes a HUGE difference is when you've been on stand for a few hours in the cold and a deer comes by. It is much easier for me to draw 60 pounds after being in the cold woods a couple hours. Of course, it's more comfortable to shoot in practice during summer as well. But the big payoff is in the late fall when you are chilled from sitting for a while before you get your chance. I'm sure, being in Wisconsin, you know what I'm talking about.

60 pound is plenty enough to kill a deer, just turned my bow up to 65 pound last year, but before that i killed 2 deer on 60. both were clean pass thoughs and the arrow was down in the ground 5 or 6 inchs

You won't miss the extra 10#'s at all. I also second the points on shot placement, extra kinetic energy from the heavier arrows, and the comfort of not having to tug back that extra weight if you hunt cold weather. All great points.
