Ammunition Regulations: Wisconsin

Postby ChaplainCharlie » Wed Nov 17, 2010 12:36 am

Hey I'm new to hunting and I'm going to be using my 5.56mm AR-15. I have a ton of FMJ but I don't know if that's legal to use. Do I need to go buy some JHP before I go out this weekend?

Yes.  Bullet has to be an expanding type.

Not only is it illegal to use FMJ in most states, but it is not a good idea.  Fully-jacketed military ammo tends to pencil through the deer and not create a decent wound channel.  Be careful.  You also don't want to get varmint ammo that expands too fast.

From what I understand, a good deer load is the Winchester Power Point 64 grainers.

In VA rifles must be .23 caliber or larger.  Thus making the .223 AR-15 illegal itself, regardless of the bullet type.  FMJ is not a good idea for any deer.  Check your regs!
