What Gun/Guns and Ammo do You Deer Hunt with?

Used to be a mdl 70 win 7mm mag until last year, we rebarrled it to a .300 wsm with a heavy bull barrel.
running 165gr hornady sst w/ 60 gr of h-380. thats the load that this one loves. good out to 400 plus.
Took 2 deer this year and they both face planted right where they were shot.
Maybe next year Ill be able to do more, not amny deer here in Iraq.

We do a bit of coyote/fox hunting, and I have shot both the CZ varmint in .204 and the Savage 12 Varminter 22-250. I prefer the accutrigger over the CZ trigger hands down.
As far as accuracy goes I haven't shot a more accurate gun than my Savage 22-250. As fas as caliber the 22-250 is a time proven cartridge.

I have taken a fox at 480 yds with the 22-250.




As far as deer hunting goes, I have a Rem 700 in 243. A Weatherby Mark in 7MM. A Browning A-Bolt in 270. And a new Browning X-Bolt in 325 WSM.

-The 243 is great for mid range well placed shots. A great caliber for deer.
-The 7MM is what I have killed the majority of my deer with. 100+ whitetails in Georgia. My longest kill with the Weatherby is around 300 yards.
-I love the 270 but I just needed more punch down range.
-So I got the 325 WSM even with all the hype vs. criticism that the Short Mags have gotten. All in all I love it. Stacking holes at 100 yards. Coupled with the Nikon Monarch X (BDC) its very deadly up to 500 yards. Of course I dont "NEED" that much lead, but it serves its purpose. Planning a moose trip next year as well, so I will definately take the 325. It kicks less than my 7MM, shoots up to a 220 grain bullet, and the balance of the gun is unmatched.

Our leases are made up of recently cut timber, so a 400+ yard shot is very normal.

If you are shooting <200 yards then yes a 30-30, 243, 30-06 are all great calibers.

The only downside of the 325 is that the ammo is expensive and a little harder to find.

I alternate between my only 2 rifles:

.270 Mossberg 4x4 topped with a 3-9x40 Nikon Buckmaster BDC (130grn reloads)
.300wsm Browning X-Bolt topped with a 4-16x50 Millett TRS Mil-Dot (180grn reloads)

I usually us the Mossberg as my beater rifle; such as hiking in long distances, hunting in the rain, hunting in the snow (such as of late).  I just don't like to get that Browning too dirty [:D]

I use a remington model 710 30-06. I also use remington 180 grain core-loks ( Deadliest mushroom in the woods baby!)

Browning A-Bolt 30/06..Leupold VX-II Scope 3x9 40mm objective.
Remington core lok 180 grain. I always felt this was a universal set up, and could be used for hunting any big game, anywhere.

I shoot a Model 7600 Rem pump loaded with 150 grain coreloks, topped with a T/C 1.5-5X32. This combo gets me a 1 and a quarter inch group at 100 yards.
For muzzleloader, I shoot a T/C Scout topped with a bushnell 1.5-4X32 banner scope,shooting 240 grain Hornaday sabots and 90 grains of Jim Shockeys gold loose powder. This combo gets me a 1.5" group at 50 yards.

I hunt in Indiana and Maryland. In Indiana I use a Marlin lever action 44 mag with a tasco 3X9X40 scope. Yes its cheap but works really well. In Maryland I use either a 30/30 Marlin lever action with a 3X9X40 scope (Cam with the rifle when I bought it from Dicks) or a 35 cal lever action Marlin mo scoper for walking.

This year I'm toting the S&W 500 Magnum hand cannon through the Indiana puckerbrush. I'm looking for a volunteer to walk in front of me so that I can rest the barrel on his/her shoulder to relieve the weight a little bit. Are there any volunteers out there? Ear plugs are required. Scope is a Bushnell Trophy 2-6 X 32. Barrel length is 8-3/8" The round shown is a 500 grain Hornady. The gun is presently sighted zero at 450 meters. I’m not sure I can see 450 meters much less shoot something at that distance. I'm gonna redial the scope to set impact 2-3/4" high at 50 yards using HSM 350 grain JHPs. That ought to get me in the zone on a deer out to about 125 yards. Beyond that, it's a par 2. I bought this gun in 2008 and carried it deer hunting while iron sighted that year. I didn’t get any shot opportunities in my comfort zone while trying to fill my nanny tag that year. I scoped the gun in February of 2009, but, my youngest son decided he needed a large bore handgun to shoot league with so he took it to Fort Polk , LA with him that year and I didn’t see it again until he came home on leave this past month. He brought all his guns (and mine) to my house to keep locked in the gun safes until he completes his TDY training at Fort Gordon next February. He’ll then be transferring to Fort Riley, Kansas and he’ll disappear with my gun again, so I’d better kill something this year.
