It seems to be an honest mistake. Perhaps he was new to hunting, maybe he took a long shot and did not notice the markings, or maybe he did not read the law or just wasn't paying attention while the lawmakers were talking about "Piebalds". As soon as he found out he made a mistake he took ownership and "manned up". Everyone makes mistakes. Let's all learn from his.
