In honor of St. Patrick’s Day this weekend, we offer a wee tip of the glass to the deer in Ireland. Three species exist – Red, Fallow and Sika – and a fourth, the Irish Elk, is believed to have become extinct about 10,000 years ago. Skeletal remains are found occasionally in peat bogs. The country even has a Wild Deer Association, founded in 1981, which is “the largest organisation of its kind in Ireland, representing those involvedĀ in deer management, deer stalking and people with an interest in the conservation and well-being of Ireland’s wild deer herds.” It’s a cool site, www.wilddeerireland.com, with photos and information. Happy St. Patrick’s weekend!
