Deer & Deer Hunting
Writer’s and
Photographer’s Guidelines As the masthead implies, this is a specialized magazine devoted to deer and deer hunting (with a strict emphasis on white-tailed deer). Readers include a cross-section of the deer hunting population: individuals who hunt with bow, gun or camera. The editorial content of the magazine focuses on white-tailed deer biology and behavior, management principles and practices, habitat requirements, natural history of deer, hunting techniques and hunting ethics. We also publish a wide range of “how-to” articles designed to help hunters locate and get close to deer at all times of the year. Most of our readership consists of three-season hunters (bow, centerfire/shotgun and muzzleloader) and about one-third camera hunt. Feature articles dealing with deer biology or behavior should be documented by scientific research (the author or that of others) as opposed to a limited number of personal observations. Freelance material is also accepted for one of our regular departments. “Deer Browse” contains short items reporting unusual observations of deer behavior, unique hunting experiences and newsworthy information. Deer & Deer Hunting is published 10 times annually. Cover dates for the eight regular issues are January, March, June, August, September, October, November and December. The remaining issues, the Deer Hunter’s Equipment Guide, and a special issue in October, are distributed to subscribers and newsstands in early August. Manuscripts and Queries1) Electronic file saved as a Microsoft Word document submitted via e-mail 2) Length: Features – 1,000 to 2,000 words, “Browse” – 200 to 500 words. 3) Query letter is appreciated giving brief description of subject matter being considered by author. 4) Photos and/or artwork appreciated with articles, but are not mandatory. 5) Payment is made within 45 days upon acceptance of manuscript. Features $150 to $600 “Browse” $25 to $250 6) Manuscripts should be submitted in a Microsoft Word or text-message file. They can be e-mailed to the editor. 7) E-mail queries are preferred.
8) Authors and photographers are required to sign publishing contracts. One-time payment is made for first-time North American rights plus digital rights. PhotosWe prefer action shots of white-tailed deer, as opposed to portraits. We also use photos showing hunters engaged in deer hunting and related activities. For the front cover we prefer vertical transparencies that have ample space at the top of the photo to allow for the magazine masthead. We use only photos of live deer in natural settings for the cover of the magazine. Digital photos should saved as high-resolution tiff or jpeg file formats on a DVR or a CD, and they should be accompanied by a contact sheet that clearly displays the image and clearly indicates each file's specific title or extension. File-size compression should allow the file to maintain a minimum of 300 pixels per square inch when re-sized or edited in any fashion to actual image sizes of 11 inches by 17 inches for horizontal images, and 8.5 inches by 11 inches for vertical images. Please include your name and contact information on any CD or DVR you send for consideration, as well as on any included contact sheets. Photo PaymentsPhoto payments are made upon publication.
