Officials continue to test deer for chronic wasting disease after 228 were killed in a fenced captive game farm following detection of the fatal disease.
Chronic wasting disease is always fatal to deer and has been detected in more than two dozen U.S. states and in Canada. State and federal agents in Wisconsin with the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and U.S. Department of Agriculture-APHIS were performing tests after they euthanized 228 deer at an Eau Claire County game farm.
More than two dozen deer at the fenced facility were positive for CWD. The deer were killed via injection or by sharpshooters. More testing will be done on the 163 adult deer and 65 fawns.
The captive farm is owned by Richard Vojtik and is located near Fairchild in southeastern Eau Claire County. He will be reimbursed for part of the appraised value, up to $1,500 per deer. Vojtik also must maintain the farm’s fences for five years and not put deer or other cervids in the area, as part of his agreement with state officials.
Deer previously have escaped from the farm, prompting officials to move quickly and also raise concerns about CWD in the wild deer of the county. So far no wild deer have been detected with CWD there.
