What makes an arrow accurate for crossbow hunting? This question will be debated thousands of times during the next few months as hunters throughout the country begin to prepare for crossbow hunting seasons. TenPoint Crossbow Technologies believes they have the answer. According to TenPoint CEO Rick Bednar, “The crossbow marketplace has been demanding a premium arrow for quite some time. Why are these arrows so accurate? The brief answer lies in TenPoint’s attention to detail and unwillingness to sacrifice quality for quantity. But, to paint a more colorful picture, we must look at TenPoint’s arrow design process and the quality control steps that they take post-production.
It’s no secret that TenPoint has been leading the pack when it comes to engineering and producing high-performance hunting crossbows over the last few years. While designing these crossbows, TenPoint’s engineers determined that a new, stiffer, premium carbon arrow would be needed that could withstand being shot from these high-speed and high-energy crossbows. Thus, they began the process to design an arrow that could hold up to greater shooting and impact stresses, and also fly with match-grade accuracy, knowing that you must use the highest quality arrow components to have an accurate arrow.
The first step was to find a carbon arrow shaft strong enough and stiff enough to perform well. They chose a shaft that is constructed from high modulus carbon fiber with a hoop strength of 33 MSI (million-pounds-per-square-inch), and is wrapped in an exclusive LAZER-TECH carbon fiber weave that reduces spine variation by 80 percent and helps to increase hoop strength by 40 percent. This results in less breakage and increased accuracy due to reduced ovalizing at the launch. Next, they chose to fletch these shafts with 3.5-inch Bohning X Vanes, due to the stiffness and resilience of the vane material and their aerodynamic shape. Finally, they experimented with different insert materials and weights to determine the ideal F.O.C., and they settled upon an 84-grain brass insert, giving this arrow an F.O.C of 17 percent. These components combine to produce an arrow with a total finished weight of 450 grains, which is an ideal crossbow arrow weight for hunting.
TenPoint’s quality control measures post-production are very stringent. Each CenterPunch arrow shaft is inspected for straightness to within .001 inch, and each package of arrows is weight-grain matched to within 1 grain per arrow. TenPoint also uses computer-aided-testing to verify that the vanes on each arrow shaft are as close to being equidistant as possible, helping to ensure consistent arrow flight. As most archers know, one of the keys to accuracy when constructing arrows is consistency in the build process and in the arrow components. The more similar in construction that one arrow is to another means that these arrows will display similar trajectories when fired. Arrows that do not fall within the company’s strict tolerances are removed from the pool of arrows to be sold, helping to guarantee that what you receive will shoot with unmatched accuracy.
