Are You Obsessed With Scent Control? Read This (Part 2)

When you master a routine for reducing human odor, you soon realize you have the edge to increase your success in the field. I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to regulating variables, so I take several measures in preparing my clothing for greater encounters in the field. Many folks wash their hunting clothes with scent-free products, but is it enough?

Washing with Scent Killer Gold (SKG) laundry detergent will ensure you haven’t added brighteners or smells that day-to-day detergents contain. What you want is clean clothes, free of any human or synthetic odor. It may sound easy but it’s easier to make a mistake.

If you live in a typical household, your washing machine sees lots of action. It removes dirt, grime, and smell from your clothes, but can harbor those same things within the washing drum itself after your laundry has been washed. Whenever you are washing your hunting clothes do not mix in regular household or work clothes. Doing so just makes it more difficult to keep your best hunting clothes in perfect condition for hunting.

Be complete. That is, make sure you include everything from your underwear to your socks and caps, so everything in your wardrobe, at every layer, has been washed with SKG. Leaving just one piece out is all that is required for a deer to smell you in the stand. Not going 100% of the way in treating all of your clothes means you don’t have the full advantage.

You aren’t likely to wash your boots, but make sure you spray them down regularly with Scent Killer Super Charged spray for the more difficult jobs.

Drying

Once your clothes are washed, take an Scent Killer Autumn Formula dryer sheet and rub it between your hands. You can spray the inside of the dryer with Super Charged spray to get rid of extra scent the dryer sheet may not be able to handle. Just stick your head in the dryer before spraying and see if you can identify the host of smells a dryer holds.

With the dryer sheet scent on your hands move your clothes from the washer to dryer. You can add the dryer sheet at this time and dry your clothes. When complete you need to ensure you are handling clothes with scent-free hands and have a bag or container, which has also been treated, to store them.

Storage

Large Ziploc bags, travel totes, Rubbermaid containers, or similar air tight options are required to keep your clothes ready to hunt. If you are folding clothes on a table, make sure you spray it with Scent Killer before placing a single item of clothing on it. Use the SKG Field Wipes to clean your hands before removing clothes or folding and storing them. It may sound extreme, but you’ve already made the financial investment to go scent free, and now you need to make the time and diligent commitment to reap the rewards. The bags or containers can be sprayed ahead of time, but I like to simply place a No Zone Tote Tamers in the storage container to keep scent out.

Transport

On hunt days you can shower, dress in scent-free clothing and head straight to the stand. If you are traveling by vehicle, make sure to use the Super Charged spray on the seats and steering wheel before getting in. Even spray the doors that might come in contact with your pants while driving or getting in and out of the vehicle.

To be complete, use SKG Spray or Super Charged to give everything a once over before heading out. It is the final insurance to help you get that big buck you’ve been dreaming about and working hard to put your tag on.

These are a few tips to get you started on the road to reducing human odor.
