For hunters who accept no less than the best, the new Viper® HD line delivers an unparalleled edge in the field, ensuring that when the decisive moment comes, success isn’t just anticipated — it’s assured. Each one of the new scopes are built with the same tough, reliable features that have made Vortex Optics a favorite among deer hunters around the country. They are argon gas purged and O-ring sealed for fogproof and waterproof performance in all weather conditions, with fully multi-coated lenses that provide anti-reflective coatings on all air-to-glass surfaces, which increase light transmission for greater clarity and low-light performance, plus  Armortek® ultra-hard, scratch-resistant coating protects exterior lenses from scratches, oil and dirt.

With all of the Viper HD riflescopes available and so many options to choose from, here’s a quick comparison of first focal plane (FFP) vs. second focal plane (SFP) reticle.

A second focal plane reticle is visually consistent in size and weight across the magnification range; however, the subtension values are only accurate on one magnification, typically the highest. The Viper® HD 5-25×50 SFP’s subtensions are accurate at 20x. Second focal plane reticles are often ideal for hunting because they are simple to use and it is easy to find the center point of aim for quick shots, in low light, and on low magnification.

First focal plane reticles will scale with magnification, and the subtensions used for ranging, holdovers, and wind corrections will be accurate at all magnifications. First focal plane reticles are ideal for hunting when greater precision is required because the subtensions are true at all magnifications. This allows for greater speed when holding for wind and elevation.

The illuminated reticle is another feature that sets these optics apart from the rest of the pack, and are an outstanding attribute that every deer hunter can appreciate. The expected battery run time for each Viper HD riflescope at illumination setting 6 is 80 hours. And if the battery power does eventually run out on you unexpectedly, the second focal plane Viper® HD riflescopes feature a wire reticle and the first focal plane Viper® HD riflescopes feature a glass-etched reticle, both of which can be used without illumination.

Reticle Options

Dead-Hold BDC: Customized hashmark design helps eliminate guesswork on holdover and windage corrections. Good for hunting and shooting at varying ranges, where estimating holdover is a concern.

VMR-3: Designed to maximize long-distance shooting and ranging abilities, the VMR-3 reticle can be used to effectively determine ranges, holdovers, windage corrections, and moving target leads. The fine center crosshair subtensions on the VMR-3 reticle were carefully chosen to provide the optimum balance between precision aiming and low-light visibility.

VMR-4: Designed to maximize long-distance shooting and ranging abilities, the VMR-4 reticle can be used to effectively determine ranges, holdovers, windage corrections, and moving target leads. Ultra-precision laser etching on the glass reticle ensures that specifications are kept to the tightest tolerances possible. The fine center crosshair subtensions on the VMR-4 reticle were carefully chosen to provide the optimum balance between precision aiming and low-light visibility. Includes windage reference dots on drop lines.

Every Viper HD riflescope includes:

  • Neoprene Cover
  • Sunshade
  • Lens Cloth
  • CR2032 Battery
  • Custom Turret Tool (on select models)
  • RevStop® Zero Ring (on select models)

As with all Vortex Optics, these new riflescopes continue to be covered by the renowned VIP Warranty.
