3 States Set New Whitetail Harvest Records

Final deer harvest figures from last deer season are in, and hunters in three Northeastern states helped set new all-time whitetail harvest records.

According to state wildlife agencies, Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire each established new single-season harvest records. The figures are compiled annually by Deer & Deer Hunting for its Deer Hunters’ Almanac.

Maine led the way with a record harvest of 55,876 whitetails, an increase of 13,617 deer from 2024 and nearly 12% above the state’s five-year average. The previous record of 43,787 deer was set in 2022.

Of the 2025 total, firearms hunters accounted for 48,670 deer, while bowhunters harvested 7,206.

Massachusetts also set a new benchmark with a harvest of 16,681 whitetails, surpassing the previous record of 15,853 set in 2022. The new mark exceeded the old record by 828 deer, or 5.2%. Firearms hunters harvested 8,588 deer, while bowhunters tagged 8,093.

New Hampshire’s record came by the narrowest margin. Hunters harvested 14,387 deer in 2025, topping the previous record of 14,186 by just 201 animals. Yet the achievement may be the most notable of the three. New Hampshire’s former record stood for 58 years, having been set in 1967. The state’s harvest has remained remarkably consistent over the past two decades, averaging 13,287 deer annually.

In 2025, New Hampshire firearms hunters accounted for 9,465 deer, while bowhunters harvested 4,922.

“These records show that deer hunting remains strong across North America,” said Deer & Deer Hunting Editor-in-Chief Daniel Schmidt. “We tip our hunting hats to the hunters in each state for their responsible stewardship of the resource and their continued appreciation of one of nature’s finest sources of wild game.”

Texas holds the nation’s single-season harvest record with 918,009 deer, set in 2017.

The Lone Star state uses computer modeling to estimate harvest numbers. Wisconsin holds the record for the most accurate harvest ever recorded with 618,274 deer (2000). That figure was obtained from in-person registration.
