Comedian and film producer Jay Leggett died Saturday after a successful hunt in Wisconsin on the opening day of the state’s firearms deer season.

Leggett, 50, was a native of Tomahawk, Wis., where he was hunting Saturday. Officials said Leggett’s body was discovered by his family at his cabin beside his all-terrain vehicle, which had a deer strapped to it. Paramedics could not revive Leggett. The cause was a heart attack.

Leggett was a comedian, writer, producer and actor. He produced a documentary in 2011 titled “To the Hunt: Deer Season in Tomahawk, Wisconsin” that chronicled the events and camaraderie of deer camp and hunting. He was a comedian in Chicago before moving to Los Angeles, and worked for the TV comedy series “In Living Color.” Leggett also made appearances in other shows and films including ER, NYPD Blue and The Drew Carey Show.

“He was doing what he loved,” Mary Schlag, manager of the Tomahawk Cinema where his hunting documentary premiered, told the Wausau Daily Herald. “If there’s any comfort in his passing, that’s it. He was doing something he loved.”

Leggett was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
