Three New York men allegedly used elaborate means — including a trap door — to hide their deer poaching activities earlier this year.
According to a published report, the men were arrested and charged for a string of illegal deer kills in Herkimer County, NY. During an investigation, New York wildlife officers discovered the men used spotlights to find deer in the middle of the night. They were arrested when an officer (who was parked nearby) pulled them over after hearing shots ring out from the suspects’ vehicle.
The officer discovered the suspects were already in possession of one illegally killed white-tailed doe. That deer had been stuffed into the trunk of the vehicle, but the officer found it after seeing fresh hair sticking out of the trunk’s lid. A subsequent search found a loaded shotgun that was concealed behind a trap door.
The report indicates the men admitted to shooting the doe earlier that night. They also provided information on additional illegal deer kills.
They have been charged with jacklighting, possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle, spotlighting while possessing a loaded firearm, and shooting from a public highway.
