Hunters in one state apparently have a pretty good relationship with their state wildlife agency, which shifted deer season dates to accommodate a request for hunting opportunities.

Deer hunters in Nebraska wanted to hunt bucks that still have velvet on their antlers. So the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission shifted the season’s opening day to Sept. 1.

It’s the first time in more than three decades the season has opened earlier than Sept. 15.

Biologically, there’s probably not a whit’s difference in killing a deer two weeks earlier and still in velvet. Some hunters love that opportunity, and others don’t. But now Nebraska hunters will have the chance.

Nebraska’s season runs through Dec. 31.
