A father and son have been sentenced following their convictions on illegal deer transportation charges that involved a lengthy investigation in at least three states.
Donald W. Wainwright Sr., formerly of Ohio, was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison and other penalties. The investigation was sparked five years ago after wildlife officers saw deer peeking through a cargo trailer on an Ohio interstate. Wainright’s son, Donald W. Wainright Jr., was also convicted and sentenced to three years’ probation.

Five years after state wildlife officers noticed the animals heading south on the highway, former Ohio resident Donald W. Wainwright Sr. was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for illegally transporting white-tailed deer.
U.S. District Judge Edmund A. Sargus Jr. also ordered Wainwright, 49, to serve 200 hours of community service, pay a $125,000 fine and have a letter published in the Deer Breeders’ Gazette detailing his illegal activities and warning others not to engage in illegal deer trafficking.
A sobbing Wainwright told Sargus that he took full responsibility for his actions and felt disgraced to stand before him.
“Our church teaches us to be better than this,” he said. “Life has been hell the last six years.”
