A buck with an antler stuck in a net got a lucky break when a Pennsylvania state game warden responded to the scene.
A concerned citizen in Berks County called in about the deer. Wildlife officials didn’t say how long the deer had been stuck for.
State Game Warden Ryan Zawada arrived at the scene to a very distressed deer, which made Zawada nervous that chemical immobilization to help remove the deer from the net might induce a heart attack. Getting close to cut the deer loose didn’t seem like a safe option either. Instead he decided shooting the caught antler off was the best option. After one shot, the antler broke off and the deer ran away unharmed. You can see part of the caught antler dangling from the net in the images below.
Excellent thinking and shooting by State Game Warden Ryan Zawada! Also great work by Patrick Scott on reporting the incident and taking photos.
