It’s a safe bet that if you asked 100 deer hunters, or any hunters for that matter, what they started out with as a youngster that a good number would respond with “BB gun” and “a 22-caliber rifle.”
You probably could toss in the .410 shotgun, too, and have a solid trio. All are good starter guns for youngsters to help teach safety, discipline and marksmanship. The .410 (and later the 20-gauge) provides some “boom” without much recoil, helping to eradicate the nasty flinch sometimes caused by an egotistical mentor sticking “a real gun” in a kid’s hands and creating a problem early in life.
The .22 rifle certainly is a great consideration for getting started. Earlier this summer, Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. introduced the Ruger American Rimfire rifle with wood stock. In response to customer requests, this new model brings an exciting variation to an already popular rifle line. The stock is made from a hardwood blank in Newport, N.H., and mated to the popular .22 LR bolt-action in Mayodan, N.C., resulting in a rifle with classic good looks and modern performance.
Ruger engineers designed this wood stock to host the same patent-pending Power Bedding integral bedding block system and free floated barrel that have made the Ruger American Rimfire rifle family outstandingly accurate.
The attractive wood stock features front and rear sling swivel studs, a metal trigger guard, checkering on the grip and fore end, and a rubber buttpad to make for a comfortable 13.75-inch length of pull.
