One of the Midwest’s crown jewels of deer hunting might be a little more crowded with nonresident hunters if a group of lawmakers get their way. What’s even more interesting is this state was recently ravaged by EHD last summer.
According to a report by KIWARADIO, a small group of Iowa House representatives are proposing adding 1,500 nonresident deer hunting tags to the state’s current total of 6,000 that are handed out via lottery each year.
Representative Dean Fisher, a Republican from Montour, says expanding deer hunting opportunities would be good for Iowa’s economy. Opponents of the change say that urban Iowa residents have a hard enough time already when trying to find a place to hunt deer, and that they shouldn’t have to compete with nonresidents for the dwindling access.
Currently, a nonresident must pay about $644 in applicable fees and licenses to obtain a buck tag. The 25% increase in total tags would net the state just shy of $1 million in revenue.
