Police officers found a live deer in the trunk of a car while conducting a traffic stop on Jan. 6 in Newberry Township, Pennsylvania around midnight. The driver was suspected of driving under the influence, according to authorities.
Police say the officer noticed the deer in the back of the car, according to Newschannel 20. The driver and passenger of the car told the officer they hit the deer and placed it in the trunk, thinking it was dead. A video of the deer hopping out of the vehicle is on the department’s YouTube page.
When they realized the deer was still alive, they kept driving with it still in the trunk, according to authorities. The officer had the passenger, a 21-year-old York Haven man, remove the deer from the vehicle. The 19-year-old female driver was taken into custody as part of the DUI investigation.
Please note that in most states, motorists are required to get a tag for a road-killed deer. In Pennsylvania, any legal resident picking up road-killed deer must contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission or Game Commission Officer within 24 hours of possessing the road-killed deer to report it and obtain permit or permit number.
