Shed Puts Deer Hunter on Quest For 150-Inch Brute

Mississippi bowhunter Andy Smith knew the shed he picked up in spring came off a buck with potential to be a head-turner this autumn, and at that point he put all his efforts into hunting this specific whitetail.

After a year of preparation, game camera photos and then a sighting of the buck this season, Smith figured if he played his cards right he might have a crack at it. On Oct. 19, everything fell into place.

“I saw this buck last season, had trail camera photos this year and actually got a look at him about a week ago at 90 yards,” Smith told Mississippi Sportsman magazine. “I was really focused on getting a crack at this buck this season.”

Smith got a shot at the buck but was unsure if he’d hit it. After returning from the evening hunt and eating with his hunting buddies, they went back to his stand location. They found a good blood trail and his arrow but didn’t find the deer. Smith decided to wait until the next morning, returned with tracking dogs and found the buck.

Smith’s deer scored 150 inches, with 11 points and a 17-inch inside spread.
