Despite the usual yammering about using contraceptives and idiotically sensational phrases like “slaughtering” in media reports, officials at a swanky coastal resort community have given the green light to bring in sharpshooters to effectively, quickly and firmly deal with a severe problem of overpopulated deer.
Following the science-based recommendations of its deer management committee, the Jekyll Island Authority appears set to use U.S. Department of Agriculture sharpshooters to kill deer on the Georgia resort island. The committee recommends at least 80 deer be eliminated immediately from the estimated population of 80 to 146 deer per square mile on the island.
Although hunting often is used in conjunction with hired sharpshooters, the committee’s chairman said it’s not the right time yet for that option on Jekyll Island.
