CNN Journalist Jake Tapper Not Out of Touch with Soldiers, Deer Hunters

I have to tip my Mossy Oak Camouflage hat to, well, Mossy Oak this week for adding my Twitter handle on a post, then retweeting a photo of CNN anchor and chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper.

The pic shows Tapper packing a box for a US solider serving in Afghanistan. In one hand, he has a package of Oreo cookies. In the other, a copy of the March issue of Deer & Deer Hunting.

I immediately retweeted it, thanked Mr. Tapper, and offered to send more magazines if he needed them. He instantly replied “thank you, and yes.” Off went a box of DDH magazines to the CNN corporate address in Washington, D.C., “Attention: Jake Tapper.”

If a copy of D&DH is going to help one of our men or women serving overseas forget about their current situation for even a moment — and relive precious memories from being here at home — then it is beyond a pleasure to help out. Everyone here at D&DH salutes our service men and women. They are putting their lives on the line just so we can continue to live these incredibly blessed lives we’ve been given.

In doing just a small bit of research on Jake Tapper that day, I found this very interesting post from Faith Braverman of the Daily Caller:

“Award-winning journalist and author Jake Tapper says most reporters’ bias comes from being out of touch.

In an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit today, Tapper wrote:

“I think there are a lot of hard-working reporters in NYC and DC who have never fired a gun, or never worked a 9-5 manual labor job, or lived in the middle of the country, or worried about their next paycheck, or have anyone in their family who serves in the military and I think that creates a cultural bias. But I also think there are a lot of reporters who work to counter that and understand the limitations of their own realities. But yes, I do think there is bias. Reluctant to name names though because I try to be collegial.”

Very admirable approach, Mr. Tapper. Not sure if you’re a deer hunter, but you can share a campfire with us any time. Even if it’s just to try it out to remove any cultural bias that’s rubbed off on you from working in the nation’s capital.
