It’s been a whale of a season for Team DDH this year, with great hunts and bucks throughout the country.

Deer & Deer Hunting Editor Gordy Krahn has been in west Texas the past week hunting for the unique Carmen Mountain white-tailed deer. While similar to the Coues deer, the Carmen sub-species is a little smaller. The Carmen sub-species lives in the incredibly rugged, scenic mountains of extreme west Texas. Krahn has been off the grid in search of this great deer and finally clinched the deal.

Here’s some info from the National Park Service about these unique deer:

Carmen Mountains white-tailed deer were described first by Goldman and Kellogg in 1940. The type specimen, an adult male, was collected by J. M. Dealey on 27 October l939 in Botellas Canyon, Sierra del Carmen, Coahuila, Mexico.

The Carmen deer is small in size, with moderately spreading antlers which vary considerably in length and form. Many antlers form small baskets, with the main beams curving tightly inward, but sweeping beams forming wider arched antlers also are common. The Carmen deer approaches the color of the Texas white-tailed deer (O. v. texanus).
