We love hearing good deer hunting success stories and even moreso when hunters have capitalized on some of the best tips or suggestions to help them be successful.

Larry J. McKenzie of South Carolina wrote in to one of our good friends, John “Smokey” McNicholas, to let him know about his good hunts last season. McNicholas is the founder of Smokey’s Deer Lure and hears these great stories all the time, too. He passed this one on to us:

“I had some luck last Fall in South Carolina using the buck pre-orbital and interdigital gland lures,” McKenzie wrote. “I went in and doctored up existing scrapes with these lures, and I was very happy with the results. The doe and buck were shot with a crossbow one hour apart on Sept. 21. The 7-point buck was shot in rifle season three weeks later at a different location.”

McKenzie also let McNicholas know he was placing another order. Nothing like a happy hunter and happy customer!

Making mock scrapes and licking branches, or freshening existing licking branches, is a great way to get bucks within bow or gun range. Learning to make these mock scrapes and licking branches is easy with the right tools to get it done. The licking branch is a critical component of the mock scrape — some believe the key component — and making it the most realistic you can is the best way to ensure results.

McNicholas has been bottling his gland lures for years as well as hunting with them, the latter long before he began selling them.

“The Ingredients of my gland lures are proprietary, but I can assure you they are extracted from the preorbital, tarsal interdigital, forehead, and interdigital glands taken from harvested deer and processed to enhance and retain the properties of the scent,” he said. “My preorbital gland lure is the only lure on the market that has a patent pending on its process.

“I only use glass bottles because plastic tends to leach out its scent and, degrade over time diluting and definitely shortens the scent of it’s shelf life. All my gland lures will only get better with age. Store them in a cool to dark area out of direct sunlight. You can be assured my lures will not lose it potency and will be fresh as the day it was bottled.”

Smokey’s Preorbital is part of this fantastic kit that includes downloads, a Whitetail Behavior DVD and more to help you create the best licking branches possible this season.
