It’s about time we rewrite an old axiom. When speaking of Deer & Deer Hunting’s content, let us mark this as the issue when we note how the more things change, the more they get improved.

While many facets of this magazine underwent changes during its early years in the 1970s, some features remained basically unchanged since their inception.

One example is our “Deer Browse” section. This column appeared for the first time in the sixth issue of D&DH (July 1978), and it has been a regular department ever since.

Back then, “Deer Browse” was a forum of sorts — an exchange of comments and information by members of the Stump Sitters Whitetail Study Group. Interestingly, the first reader submission provided for “Browse” was a field report by group member Gene Wensel, who is now a veteran bow-hunter and hunting industry celebrity.

As years passed and D&DH volumes piled up, “Deer Browse” was expanded to include news, notes and observations on anything and everything related to deer, including briefs on biology, physiology and research, and more great insights of unusual field reports from readers.

As well as being the longest running regular department, it remains one of the most popular.

So, for those reasons and more, we proudly unveil a new and improved “Browse” section in this issue.

For starters, you’ll notice that we’ve moved the column to the front of the magazine. A fan favorite column deserves at least that much. We’re also expanding the column. With each issue, you will notice “Browse” will span several pages and include everything from whitetail news and research briefs to field notes, behavior observations, venison processing tips and recipes, and much more.

We will also be moving the column online at deeranddeerhunting.com. The digital version, however, will include expanded coverage, more opportunities for you to contribute, surveys, and links to more information on deer behavior and hunting tactics.

Above all, “Browse” will remain as your column. It always has been, and always will be.

New? Not really. Improved? Definitely.
