90-Year-Old Deer Hunter Celebrates 80th Hunting Anniversary With 7-Point Mule Deer

For Mildred Bryant, if she can still shoulder a firearm, see down the scope and trek through open terrain, she’s going to go hunting. The 90-year-old who lives in New Plymouth, Idaho has been hunting for eight decades, and she has no plans of stopping. In fact, she recently killed a 3×4 mule deer near Malta.

Bryant was born near Coos Bay, Oregon and spent her childhood riding horses and going hunting. She went out and shot her first deer at 9 years old after being angry with her dad for making her stay home that day. She got a rope and hung it by its horns in a tree, then gutted it. Her father came back furious but helped her bring the buck back home.

Bryant got married, had five daughters, moved to Redmond, Oregon in the ’70s, and owned a dairy farm milking 85 cows every day of the week. She still managed to go hunting though. One day when her husband took a week off of work to go hunting with friends, she and her daughters took off on horseback to go hunting too. Bryant killed a 4×4 mule deer buck. When her husband returned home, he was jealous she shot a bigger buck than him!

This year, she wanted to celebrate 80 years of hunting (she couldn’t go last year). She and her daughter made plans to hunt a mule deer buck on a friend’s property in Malta this fall. When opening day came, Bryant and her party found a spot on the edge of the property. A little buck stepped out and she missed the shot. Soon after, the property owner’s ranch managers spotted two bucks, one a large 3×4. Bryant squeezed the trigger at 224 yards and the large buck dropped instantly. It’s currently at the taxidermist. She plans on putting it right next to her 50-year-old 4×4.
